Lyrics for My Music Video

Arctic Monkeys - Old Yellow Bricks

Old yellow bricks,Love's a risk,
Quite the little Escapoligist
Looked so miffed,
When you wished,
For a thousand places better than this,

You are the fugitive,
But you don't know what you're running from,
You cant kid us,
And you couldn't trick anyone,
Houdini, love you don't know what you're running away from,

Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?
Blinded by nostalgia,
Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?

She was enraged by the way,
That the emperor put traps in the cage,
And the days she being dull,
Lead to nights reading beer bottles,

You're such a fugitive,
But you don't know what you're running from,
You cant kid us,
And you couldn't trick anyone,
Houdini, love you don't know what you're running away from,

Who wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up?
Blinded by nostalgia,
Who wants to sleep in a city that never wakes up?

You're at a loss,
Just because,
It wasn't all that you thought it was,

You are a fugitive but you don't know what you're running away from,

She said I want to sleep in the city that never wakes up,
And revel in nostalgia,
I know I said he wants to sleep in the city that never wakes up but,
Dorothy was right though

Textual analysis

This video starts of with a secret meaning, the name of song " Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is also shown to mean LSD the illigal drug. This video is telling a story about how a person would feel under the influence of this illigal drug, this is where the lyrics link in with the video. A sorted arrange of colours are used to show what a person would be seeing. The opening shot is of a head filled weird and multi coloured things, this is also there to show what the state of persons mind is supose going to be. The fact that The Beatles are stood on top of this head suggests they have experiance this. The next seen is a pan across a field of heads with exactly the same content showing that a lot of people know what its like. These heads are used throughout the video to get a across how weird and crazy the LSD drug is, the constant use of bright colours is also shown to get the same message across. The audience targeted i believe will be between 18 -40, it is of more an adult theme, this is shown through the videos connotation. The representation of this video is clear, its showing how the beatles live and how they had been bought up in there set environment. They have a set ideology, there are a number of comparisents with beatles, for example Ne -Yo is taking about fame and fortune, where as the beatles songs based around love a peace with other themes coming up, also another comparisment would be eminem, his songs are based around hate and suffering. This song was a huge hit of the time purley due to its lyrical perfection, also back at the time music videos were not as common and used half as much as they are now. People enjoyed to watch a video with some kind of fantasy effect which made them think a little due to the limitation of music videos of that time. The beatles are as popular as they are due to they are what people used to or currently want to hear, there songs are varied but are based around love and and real life subjects.

Textual analysis

This Rnb song is used in a classy and represented way, it shows what Ne Yo is trying to get across. This would be the fact that his life is focused around girls money and a higher class status of living, this is shown through through the suits and clothing used in this video. The colours used in this video consist of three shades, black, gray and white these colours can be used to show class and style, no bright colours are used. There us a link between the narrative and the video, for example there is a woman parading him, the lyrics talk about controlling this is shown through this shot. in another shot a number of dancers are used to be at the feet of the artist, this gives a sense of control the he has over women. The use of lighting is used to explain the narrative, at 2.57 it shows Ne-Yo in a spot light, this shows he is important and that all the attention is on him. The connotation behind this would be the fact that his life is shown to be of wealth and sophistication as well as being a sexual icon to women. The audience aimed at will be the people who aspire to be like Ne - Yo , these will be between the ages of 14-24. This is because this age group like the wealth look with the Sharpe clothes with also the music being RnB which is much preferred by the younger audience. This is created by the institution for a certain reason, this is due to the fact that institutions try and make the most out of each video and song for the people they are trying to reach out to, they do this to make as much money as possible from each song and video. This video has the lyrics supported by non - diagetic text, this will be used to give this video some sense of class to support the narrative. The video has a variation of different shots, this is o show what tempo the song is at, if you were to listen to the song without sound you could determine which shot is used for each part of the song, slower shots are used for slower parts of the song which gives a more intimate thing which relates to the girl with Ne - Yo yet again reinforcing the fact that women crave for him and his image. The whole idea behind this song is the fact he gets attracted to a women seducing her to come closer, this is shown within the narrative and lyrics.

Textual analysis(Arctic monkeys - The View from the Afternoon)

For this video i will be looking at technical aspects along with conventions and codes of the genre. This video has very little relation to the narrative the location of the video is a urban area on the edge of a city. the beginning of the video shows the main character pushing a shopping trolley with the drums in followed by a blowing plastic bag, showing that this video will be shot in a urban area this is done through the shot being put in a old t.v style shot. A straight cut is then used to show the block of flats supporting the last shot about the location. When the camera cuts to the drummer it shows him with bandages around his hands which links to a shot later on in the scene where the bandages are covered in blood. He is put in a spot light in this dark grim location, lighting makes the main character stand out through a spot light, this could be done for a number of reasons maybe to to point out that he is the only one with something to be proud of in the location. There is a shot within this video which shows a public warning sign, it is suppose to say "do not through Sharp objects into children's playground" this is a characteristic of a run down council estate, especially when the "not" on the sign is scraped off. This video is made a little more interesting due to the fact that more then one character is present in this video, the use of extras is used to try and tell a story which i am unsure about, it is clearly done to show a time scale but what for i am not sure. I believe it is done in black and white to show that its shot in a grim location because of the set location you would think there was some kind of narrative location link but that is hardly the case. I believe there is no connotation behind this video where as the denotation is clear bit irrelevant to the narrative, the lyrics which i analysed had one or two kinks with the video itself. The audience aimed at is made clear, its aimed at the specific audience for a reason because its the best way of seeling there music, if this was done to aim at all audiences the overall feedback would no be that positive due to peoples differences in music taste. i looked at a number of this artests videos and they all have the same type of video set up, this is where most of the videos have no relation to the lyrics.

LIIAR

Representation - There are number of ways representation is used. different artists use different ways in representing their music types. I looked at a few music videos from the genre of RnB and hip hop, i realised that their representation was of a money based lifestyle with women. Also acts like kings of Leon of the rock genre show a lot of videos about there lifestyle with touring the world sharing there music, this is how they represent themselves.

LIIAR

Audience - This is the public, within the public watching music videos are certain types groups, there are certain types of genres for each group. For example, each band, group, or artist has a certain type of genre they are categorised as. Some genres are aimed at a larger audiences for example RnB is aimed at a larger target audience.

LIIAR

Institution - These people are in charge of promoting, marketing and distributing the media text. there are a number of people involved within the institution are directors, promotors, producers ect. institutions would be record companys such as EMI and Sony.

LIIAR

Ideology - this is the way a certain artest gets there media message across, each artist has a different way of doing this through the music videos they do. for example there are a number of artests who get certain things across for example a rap artist talks about poverty and violence.

LIIAR

Language - The way that a music video creates a relationship with the audience to get across a message. Media language does this through a number of aspects of media. all diagetic and non diagetic sound is used to show the meaning or back up the message being channeled to the audience, it is an aural sound.

History of music videos

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional (promo) clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos were simply known as MTVs because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country. Music videos are now known as MVs in Chinese entertainment.
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.
